Starting Conversations About Taboo Topics Through Shirts

In June of 2015, I was sitting in a police car in a parking lot when the officer said, “I have some sad news to share. Your son Charles has been found dead this morning.” Cause of death? Suicide. I thought my son loved life and had never even fathomed suicide as a potential cause of death. That’s when I realized how little is ever spoken about suicide and decided to drag that topic into the spotlight. Because studies show that talking about suicide prevents suicide.

I started by writing a newspaper article that went viral that created a following for my blog, EmotionallyNaked.com. The blog reached a half million on its third birthday and I created t-shirts for followers to wear in the community to inspire questions and conversation on this taboo topic. They have inspired curiosity and started conversation.

When I started using Bonfire they were a “local” company and I liked that they had women shaped shirts. The company has grown since I first started using them three and a half years ago and I have stuck with them.

I’m a professional public speaker and sometimes I’m at schools and want to give away shirts. Teenage girls like the slim fits. It’s great Bonfire offers so many colors and such a range of sizes. My tribe has been very happy with the quality and ease of ordering.
